Bleeding gums should never be taken for granted. Individual who experience any of the signs of bleeding gums should immediately consult this matter with their dentist because it may already be a signal for more serious and complicated dental problem like gingivitis and periodontal diseases.

Signs of bleeding gums
The following are the possible signs of bleeding gums. If you experience any one of these over a long period of time then better set-up an appointment with your dentist immediately.

Sore gums

Shifting teeth

Swollen gums

Receding gums

Blood on gums after brushing

Deep pocket formation between your gums and teeth

Common Causes of Bleeding Gums

Vigorous Brushing

Developing the habit of brushing your teeth regularly is one of the advices of dentists but this does not mean overzealously brushing your gums and teeth. This does not only result to bleeding gums but enamel erosion as well.
Improper Flossing
If vigorous brushing is not good for your oral health then improper flossing will not do you any good as well. You should be careful in flossing the side of your teeth’s natural curves and be certain not to force the floss into it because it may leave cuts on the surfaces of your gums.

Smoking
There are several reasons why you should quit smoking and one of this is bleeding gums and oral problems. Studies show that smokers are more likely to develop tartar on their teeth compared to non-smokers. Moreover, cigarette and tobacco contains hazardous chemicals and substances which reduces the effectiveness of the mouth’s immune system.

Vitamin K Deficiency
Vitaimin K is very important in blood clotting. Deficiency of this vitamin in the body can cause a person to experience bleeding gums.

Medications
Oral contraceptives, nasal sprays, anti-depressants and anti-coagulants are researched to cause bleeding gums in patients. So if you experience bleeding gums after taking in medications then it would be better to report this matter to your physician so he or she can change your prescription.

Autoimmune Disorders
This condition is rarely experienced by man but those who are infected with this disorder like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus are researched to be prone to bleeding gums.

Leukemia
Those who are diagnosed with this illness have bleeding gums as one of its prevalent characteristics.

Improper Oral Hygiene
This is the main culprit behind bleeding gums. Bacteria in the mouth will spread easily if a person does not practice good oral hygiene. When this happens, then plaque and tartar formation will rampantly spread on the surface of your teeth and gums causing gum inflammation which will eventually lead to bleeding and swelling.

Hormonal Changes
Hormonal imbalance or shift during puberty, pregnancy, menopause or menstruation may also trigger bleeding gums. The sudden increase in the level of hormones of the body causes an increased blood flow towards your gums which makes them appear red, tended and swollen.

Periodontal disease refers to any kind of gum disease. A large number of people suffer from this problem. Periodontal diseases may or may not be very serious. Some of these diseases only cause a slight inflammation in the gum. In some cases, such diseases may affect the bone and soft tissues which hold the teeth in a very bad way. There may be a few conditions in which teeth needs to be pulled out due to a gum disease. Gum disease put a risk to the oral health.
If you are wondering about the causes of periodontal diseases then you need to know about the presence of bacteria in our mouth. Different kinds of bacteria are present in our mouth. When such bacteria teams up with mucus, they develop plaque on the teeth. Plaque refers to a kind of yellow white colored sticky material. When we brush our teeth then it gets removed. However, if teeth are not brushed and flossed properly, plaque may change in to tartar, which cannot be cleaned even by brushing. It enters the base of the teeth and causes gum diseases.

Here are a few symptoms which help people and dentists to find out a periodontal disease. Swelling in the gums or bleeding in them may be an indicator of gum disease. Bad breath also indicates gum disease. If teeth feel very sensitive to heat or cold then it may be due to periodontal disease. Loosened teeth and feeling of pain while eating food are two other symptoms of gum disease.

There are a large number of problems which may occur to the teeth of people. Gingivitis is one of them. It is a periodontal disease. It causes infection and inflammation on those parts of the teeth which support it. Periodontal ligaments, tooth sockets and gums are also infected by this disease. Many people are unaware about the causes of gingivitis. The main cause of this disease is the deposition of plaque over the teeth. Plaque is a yellow kind of sticky material which is formed by the blend of mucus, bacteria and scraps of food. Decay in tooth is also caused by plaque. When plaque is not removed then it changes in to tartar. It causes inflammation and infection in the gums.

In order to know that someone is suffering from gingivitis, a dentist looks for some specific symptoms. Bleeding gums are among the most common symptoms of gingivitis. If someone has this disease, his teeth bleed even if he brushes them in a gentle manner. People who suffer from this problem may have very red or purple-red colored gums. Pain in gums also exists if gingivitis is present. Swelling in gums may also be an indicator of this disease. Gums may become shinier and sores may appear inside the mouth of a person suffering from this disease.

While treating this disease, the main motive of the dentists is to stop inflammation caused by it. Tooth cleansing is done by the dentists in a perfect manner. Different kinds of instruments are used by the dentists for making the teeth free from the plaque and tartar. Once the teeth are cleaned, the patient needs to learn the techniques of cleaning the teeth in a proper manner. Dentists tell people about the right way to brush and floss the teeth. Gingivitis patients are advised to get their teeth cleaned by a dentist for once or twice in a year or more depending on the severity of the disease. Dentists also prescribe antibacterial rinses to the people who suffer from this disease. Maintaining oral hygiene is very important for preventing the recurrence of gingivitis.
