dental phobiaDentist is one of those persons one would fear about.. and for some it’s a nightmare to visit a dentist. They feel its the hardest part to visit a dentist and have their teeth checked and treated for proper care.

Point to be noted - Some people just avoid visiting a dentist due to fear, which is referred to as Dentophobia. According to Wikipedia, it is defined as -
Dental fear refers to the fear of dentistry and of receiving dental care. A pathological form of this fear (specific phobia) is variously called dental phobia, odontophobia, dentophobia, dentist phobia, or dental anxiety.

Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block

Inferior alveolar nerve block is a procedure of giving anesthesia to the mandibular region to block certain areas from experiencing pain in those areas, and this is usually helpful to perform surgical procedures in the oral cavity.
If the Inferior alveolar nerve is blocked with the anesthesia solution, then the whole nerve along with its subdivisions like Mental nerve, Incisive nerve, lingual and the long buccal nerve are blocked. So the areas which are supplied with these branches of the nerve do not experience any pain for certain amount of time.

Dental Plaque

Dental plaque is an accumulation of thin film on the outer surface of the tooth. It should not be confused with plague which is entirely different phrase. This mainly consists of microorganisms, most of which are bacteria of Streptococcus mutans species. These bacteria are not harmful to the oral cavity generally, but during some extreme conditions, these attack the surface of the tooth.

According to studies, the carbohydrates present in the food forms a product called Dextran by the action of the bacteria, and this helps in binding of bacteria to the surface and formation of the thin layer.

Causes of toothache -

  1. Temperature Sensitivity - This is one of the most common causes, in which any contact to very hot or very cold temperature suddenly causes sensitivity to the tooth and causes pain. This is more prominent when the tooth surface has been worn out earlier and the dentin part of the tooth is exposed directly to the extreme temperatures and the dentinal tubules show the maximum sensitivity.

Root Canal

Root canal is a dental procedure which helps in removing the entire internal parts, mainly pulp chamber of the tooth. It also root canal treatinvolves the filling of the prepared empty cavity with a suitable bio-compatible material. This procedure is done and advised only when the tooth can not compensate restoring material in a small cavity on the surface. The procedure involves the removal of the nervous elements of the tooth which have been infected or decayed already due to microbial action or any physical pressures.

The procedure that involves the root canal is also called as root canal therapy or root canal treatment. This is the only procedure that can help when the entire pulp and its contents are decayed. This procedure of root canal treatment can be done by a general dentist, but the one who specializes in this field is an Endodontist.
